Welcome to the University Democrats website!
As you may notice, things are different here. Our club has had the same website for over two years, but it’s entirely gone. We wanted to offer something new; an interactive website that would be a hub for all information related to the University Democrats at the University of Texas – Austin.
The website isn’t done, but once August 25th marks the fall semester’s beginning, we hope this will be the ideal place to see our plans to take back Texas the Longhorn way.
At the University of Texas, I’ve learned that success in this world comes through thorough thinking and respect for humanity. The University Democrats fight for the politicians and policy proposals that will put these principles into our government.
Between now and November, we can move more forward in that respect. For decades now, Texas Republicans have led our great state in a cutthroat manner, molding a government that only helps those who begin with inherent advantages in our society. As a result, state government will enter 2011 less prepared than ever to serve the average Texan. We’ll have an $18 Billion budget shortfall, and the Republicans can only think of cutting state programs, such as education, that are vital to our present and future well-being.
I guarantee that Democrats will lead better if put in charge.
I look forward to working with you – let’s win in 2010!
Thanks,
Michael Hurta
University Democrats President
Welcome Back to School! No Campus for Old Democrats?
Welcome back to school, everyone! We will soon find out once again how the Forty Acres is a hub for youth political activism. As young students (at least most of us), we dominate the grassroots force that campaigns live on. Young people are the ones who make a bulk of the phone calls and door knocks that get candidates elected.
It is fitting, therefore, that the University Democrats’ first speaker of the 2010-2011 school year will be Hector Uribe, an actor from the movie No Country for Old Men. And while that’s exciting, more importantly is that Mr. Uribe represents the Texas Democratic Party as our candidate for Land Commissioner. As a former state legislator with over a decade of experience, Uribe will make a great addition to this state’s executive government. We’re proud to have him addressing us as we start our semester.
Come join us for our first meeting of the school year, where we will introduce y’all to our plan to get out the student vote and elect Democrats for the 2010 Election cycle! The election’s coming up fast, it’s important, and it’s exciting. We look forward to seeing you 8 pm next Wednesday, September 1, in JGB 2.324.
